💛 Giving Day 2025 | Our Archivist Anne Bradley found this in the Chronicle from December 1891 and with just a few hours left until the end of Giving Day, we wanted to share it to illustrate the history of giving back that runs through BGS history. We believe that £5 in 1891 would be approximately £800 now. Let us know if you think otherwise!

10 years ago today I had the pleasure of taking David Trott to London to see a producion of Our Town at the Almeida Theatre. Starring in the play was OB Anna Francolini, whom had also starred in a Middle School Play production which David had produced in 1984. I was accompanied by Katy Maw, who was also in the original cast.

What an honour to take the Law Society at BGS to visit Old Bristolians Sir Mark Warby and Sir Tim Holroyde at The Royal Courts of Justice yesterday, followed by a tour of the Guildhall with OB Tim Hailes. It was an amazing day for our students (and staff!) who got to observe criminal and civil court proceedings as well as hear about the careers of all three Old Bristolians who kindly took time out of their day to host us. #beyondbgs #bgsfamily #proudtobebgs
#flashbackfriday This week current Old Bristolians' Society Chairman Marcus Cryer (OB 1993) sent in this photo of him in a gymnastics display in the Great Hall, taught by none other than long-standing staff member and Society Past President, Pete Jakobek. 👏 Congratulations to current students Seb and Jake who were selected for the Southwest U18 @lambsrugby team for 19 January at Harrow. Seb is one of our Sixth Form Bursary Award Holders and we're incredibly proud of him and Jake.
🏈 The Lambs create opportunities to showcase rugby skills at a representative level with a freedom to express talent, unfettered by league results and structured 'coaching', leading to a style of play which excites players, their parents and supporters of the game.

For our new film project we're talking to Old Bristolians as well as current students about their journey in life and how their current, and intended, careers 'began at BGS'. Last week we visited London to interview celebrated sculptor Nigel Hall (OB 1960) Who will be next? 🏉 👑 📖 #bgsfamily #beganatbgs #proudtobebgs
Old Bristolian Tuppence Middleton is currently staring as Elizabeth Taylor in 'The Motive and the Cue' at the Noël Coward Theatre in London. Acting opposite Johnny Flynn and Mark Gatiss, and directed by Sam Mendes, the 'fierce and funny' play written by Jack Thorne offers a glimpse into the politics of a rehearsal room and the relationship between art and celebrity. Tickets are still available on the National Theatre website #proudtobebgs #bgsfamily #beyondbgs
Come celebrate Pete Jakobek as he celebrates handing over his role as President of the Old Bristolians' Society to Old Bristolian James Harris (OB 1997) at the Annual Dinner on Sat 23 March. The Oxford v Cambridge Varsity matches go back a long way and we were delighted to see that 3 OBs represented their respective universities over the weekend. Holly Weale was vice captain of Oxford in her 3rd Varsity match and after a 0-0 draw Oxford won 4-2 after penalties. In the men's match Sam Stevens represented Cambridge in what was his first Varsity match which they won 3-0.
In the rugby match at the Stone X Stadium, Fergus Dick represented Oxford but Cambridge won after a late come back to win 35-28.
Congratulations to them all.

#WhatsYourStory? Some of you may know that Fran Ripley has dyslexia, something she has shared as part of her story with students many times. At BGS we are passionate about supporting Neurodiversity and as part of Dyslexia Awareness Week (7-13 Oct) we are keen to hear from Old Bristolians who may have Dyslexia who can talk about their own story. Perhaps you were not diagnosed until you left BGS, maybe you could tell us about your ‘superpower’ having Dyslexia, or maybe you were never diagnosed but recognise traits in yourself. It would be great to hear your story. Should you wish to discuss the week in more detail please contact our Head of Learning Support, Mrs Corinne Kempt ckempt@bgs.bristol.sch.uk #DAW24 #ProudtobeBGS #BGSfamily

A renowned historian and biographer, Robert has been a keen supporter of BGS and the Old Bristolians for many years.
